Knapsack Creek Bushcare Group
The Knapsack Catchment runs from the New Lapstone Hotel past Glenbrook Oval, under the old Knapsack road and rail bridges, beside Leonay Golf Course and joins the Nepean just north of the F4 Freeway Bridge. It is situated in both the Blue Mountains City Council and the Penrith City Council local government areas.
Knapsack Creek exhibits some of the more famous historic sites of the Blue Mountains including the Knapsack bridge (used for both the Railway and Great Western Highway) and the Lapstone Zig Zag.
Historic remnants from the old railway contstruction abound.
Knapsack Reserve includes approx 250ha of the escarpment bushland and harbours the Powerful Owl, as well as recorded Koala sitings.
Much of the Knapsack Creek Bushcare activities focus around the historic Knapsack Bridge, but also extend throughout the catchment, including combining with Emu Plains Bushcare for special events.
The group meets on the second Saturday of the month commencing at 1:30 pm at the emergency parking area just past the F4 rail bridge.
A large range of activities are carried out by the group which includes:
- Weed mapping
- Weed removal
- Tree planting & plant propagation
- Track maintenance
- Bird and marsupial surveys
- Vegetation surveys
- Streamwatch monitoring in autumn and spring
- Historical walks
Photo spots have been established to record the progress being made and to monitor other changes while guided walks have been programmed to highlight the rich natural and cultural features of the catchment.

An annual dinner, which combines with other groups in the Lower Mountains, is held in December at the New Lapstone Hotel.
